Rhodes is one of the few Aegean islands that combines the deep blue waters, the wide, sandy beaches, the rocky little bays with the green valleys and the breezy springs in the center of the island. We picked the best spots of environmental interest and we present them to you, here!
The Valley of Butterflies
Near Kalamonas village, there is a rare habitat of real beauty. The Valley of Butterflies, from June until September, becomes the home of a red-brown butterfly called Panaxia Quadripunctaria. Like a fountain of life, this valley is ideal for walks in the green paths, under the tall trees that offer a unique shade during the summer season. Picturesque bridges, water lilies, waterfalls and sunny glades form a fairytale ambience. The path leads to a Monastery built in 1782.
For eco-lovers, just before the walkway, there is the Natural History museum with rare exhibits of the island’s wildlife, and species of the valley, as well as a butterfly incubator and exhibition!
The Rodini Park
Only three kilometers away from Rhodes Town, lies the oldest natural park in the world. This park has a special and rare habitat, indulging walkways and small bridges. It’s a natural paradise in the heart of the island. Peacocks wander around freely among visitors and the park offers a refreshment room and a small zoo. Take a deep breath of fresh air under the bushy trees, just a step away from the city center.
Another cradle of life of nature is located near Archaggelos village. Under the pine and plane trees, the lake of the Seven Springs calls nature lovers to relax at its shore. Adventurous visitors can try to walk all the footpaths around the lake to discover all of the Seven Springs!
Kallithea village is located on the eastern part of the island of Rhodes. Known for its spas, the facilities of which were founded in 1929,they have attracted lots of attention from scientists and patients, due to their therapeutic properties. A paradise for surf and windsurf lovers in the beautiful Aegean, Prasonisi is a small peninsula in the southern edge of Rhodes. Only a few minutes’ walk from Angela Suites + Lobby, there is one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean Sea. Elli beach is popular and usually crowded and has umbrellas, deck chairs and lots of beach bars for the visitors to enjoy.
For a quiet and relaxing day on the beach, we recommend Afandou beach. It’s located on the east side of the island and its wide length provides visitors with many choices. In some spots there are umbrellas and deck chairs, while in others you can lie down with your towel and feel the warm sand. The waters are exquisite and the beach has sports facilities such as beach volley, beach soccer and the famous Rhodes golf course.
Just below a beautiful Monastery, there is a very large beach with golden sand, deep blue waters and various canteens for a light meal or a refreshment. You will find umbrellas and deckchairs, as well as water sports facilities. If you are brave enough, you should try the footpath to the monastery to cherish the breathtaking, panoramic view to the sea.
Anthony Quinn Beach
It owes its name to the famous actor, who fell in love with the beauty of this beach in the making of “The Guns of Navarone” movie. One of the most beautiful beaches of Rhodes,it is usually preferred by younger people, since its rocky scenery does not attract families. Trees and bushes around the beach give the crystal waters a unique emerald color, while the tiny pebbles make it irresistible. Thanks to its rich and interesting seabed, it is appreciated also by divers. Anthony Quinn Beach has been awarded with a “Blue Flag” and it is known for its... quite cold waters!
For visitors that love small, picturesque bays, Ladiko Beach is the perfect choice. It has golden, thin sand, emerald waters and umbrellas. Ideal for youngsters as well as families. In fact, deck chairs have been recently placed upon the rocky part of the beach, making it a beautiful spot for those who prefer more isolated, peaceful moments at the beach.
Every day, many boats depart from the city to various beaches. A wonderful way to explore the magnificent island of Rhodes!
